New Consumer Product Safety Database to Debut March 2011

Posted on Jan 14, 2011

January 14, 2011 - Legislation that passed in 2008 required the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to increase information access to consumers in regards to product hazards and recalls. A new database set to roll out on March 11, 2011, will allow consumers this access to thousands of reports on consumer products.

According to, the CPSC will maintain a database of more than 15,000 products that have been found to be dangerous or deadly due to design or manufacturing flaws. Every year hundreds of consumer products are recalled due to safety issues, including 365 products in 2010.

In the past, product defects were typically only announced once a product recall was issued, resulting in many injuries and deaths that may have been prevented with better information made available to consumers. With the new database, the public can research a product and review any consumer complaints before they make a purchasing decision.

The hope is that the database will not only allow consumers to review products prior to purchase, but allow for better reporting of injury and fatal incidents to allow for faster recall procedures. Careful attention will have to be paid to consumer complaints submitted to the database to ensure accuracy in danger levels on products.

Consumers who choose to share product incident claims with the database will be given the option to remain anonymous, although sharing contact information may help them obtain assistance from the manufacturer. Completed and verified reports will be submitted to the manufacturer for comment and posted to the database after 10 days from notice to manufacturer.
