Belva Brown of
the Amedisys Foundation Volunteers
Many families experience the need for hospice care for friends or loved ones. Hospice care is a very important aspect of our healthcare system. The toll on the patient can vary greatly depending on the services required, the emotional impact, and the strain on their families. To make the transition smoother for both the patient and the families, the Amedisys Foundation has a number of volunteers that provide a great deal of services to both. As part of the Amedisys Foundation team of volunteers, Belva Brown utilizes her lifelong skills as a hairdresser to provide an added comfort when she visits each hospice patient. Serving countless hours over the past few years, Belva has become one of the only volunteers to cut or style hair in our region, possibly even in the state. Nominated by her colleagues at Amedisys, Belva has provided countless hours of happiness to her patients and provided a comfort that many would not have even considered for their ailing loved ones. That is why, Belva Brown was selected as this month’s The Miley Legal Group/WBOY-TV’s Celebrating Volunteer Winner.
Belva Brown as a resident of Bridgeport, West Virginia, has spent much of her adult life hair dressing and cutting. She has been a constant pillar of strength within her community and church. Working countless hours and moving her way towards retirement has not stopped her from doing what she loves. The patients she works with through the Amedisys Foundation and their families, greatly appreciate the work that she does. Her added touch to their lives brings great comfort and joy. Most, if not all, hospice patients are not capable of leaving their homes, Belva bringing this service to them adds an extra highlight to their day that they have come to anticipate.
“Our patients absolutely love her and always ask when she will be coming back,” said Nicole Dulaney, Volunteer Coordinator at Amedisys. “Her selfless act of kindness has brought a service to our patients that would never have been possible. Belva is an amazing person with a huge hearts that desired others needs before her own.”
“I appreciate the kindness and comfort Belva shows to hospice patients,” Gretchen Ross of WBOY stated. “Her work provides a source of normalcy in a situation that is not. Her love and dedication to our community is expressed through her life long skills, and I hope those that hear about her and what she does will only be further encouraged to dedicate a few hours a month to volunteering.”
“As West Virginia’s population continues to age, hospice services will continue to become more important for our families. Belva’s commitment to serve not only enhances the experience for the patients she touches, but it also provides comfort to the families that are affected by it,” said Tim Miley, owner of The Miley Legal Group. “I encourage members of our community to get more involved in these types of programs. The Amedisys Foundation is always in need of volunteers, and there are many patients and families that count on it.”

The Celebrating Volunteers awardees receive public recognition for not only themselves, but their organization. They also receive a $500 contribution to the organization they represent in their name. Gretchen Ross of WBOY TV and Tim Miley of The Miley Legal Group work together to select the awardees from the many nominations received from the public. The volunteer selected will have demonstrated their commitment to an organization through volunteerism and support.
“I am an avid supporter of volunteerism in our communities.” Miley stated. “The Celebrating Volunteers program is a way that we can recognize the hard work and dedication of individuals across our region.”
We look forward to recognizing a number of worthy individuals while giving their organizations a part of the spotlight. The program will continue recognizing volunteers throughout the coming year.
