West Virginia Spinal Injury Sufferer Completes Cross-Country Bike Ride

Suffering a severe spinal cord injury can be a catastrophic tragedy for any person. Because of the diminished physical capacity associated with such an injury, many victims must find creative ways to adjust and flourish in their challenging new lifestyle.

A West Virginia man has proven that spinal injury victims can accomplish great things, despite the challenges they face on a daily basis.

Clayton Rankin is one of 18 disabled veterans who recently finished a cross-country bicycle ride of more than 3,600 miles. The 45-year-old West Virginia man completed the journey on a recumbent bicycle which he operates with his arms while reclining on the bike.

Rankin suffered a spinal cord injury in Iraq in 2003 while deployed there with the U.S. Army. He also fought in the first Gulf War in 1990 after joining the Army in 1979. Rankin was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor in 2004.

The nationwide event, Sea to Shining Sea Bike Ride, is intended to raise awareness of injured veterans and spread a message of hope to the rest of the nation. The ride began on May 22, 2010 at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and ended on July 24 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Rankin and his fellow riders passed through a dozen states and Washington D.C. They rode an average of 70 miles per day, enduring weather conditions that ranged from hot and sunny to windy and rainy to snowy and frozen. Rankin, who has a wife of 25 years and 3 children, says he hopes his feat will show fellow wounded vets across the country that there is life after their injuries.

Spinal cord injuries can affect people of all ages, nationalities, economic standing and professional background. If you have been harmed because of somebody else's negligence and are now coping with a life-altering injury, don't hesitate to seek justice.
