WSAZ reports that the incident happened shortly before 5 p.m. on Route 34. A vehicle hit the young boy on the roadway when he darted out across the street.
The boy was unconscious when emergency crews arrived on the scene. He was then rushed to a local hospital for medical treatment, where he later died from the impact of the injuries.
The name of the driver that struck the boy has not yet been released. The victim’s name has also not been uncovered until all family members are notified.
Based on police reports, charges will not be filed in connection with this accident, considering it was unavoidable.
Route 34 was blocked to traffic between Route 62 and Liberty for some time following the accident. All lanes have since been reopened.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
