Woman Hospitalized After Vehicle Plunges Over Hancock County Embankment

August 15, 2011 - Hancock County, W.Va. - A woman was injured Friday, August 12, when her vehicle went over an embankment in Hancock County.

WBOY reports that the accident happened Friday morning on Route 8. Hancock County Sheriff Mike White said that a woman was travelling on Route 8 when she lost control of her vehicle, causing it to run off of the roadway.

The vehicle then went over an embankment and plummeted 90 feet. The vehicle finally came to rest on its roof at the bottom of the embankment.

The woman was trapped in her vehicle immediately following the accident. Emergency response crews were able to free her and carry her back up the embankment.

The woman was then transported to a local hospital for treatment. The severity of her injuries is currently unknown. The injured woman's identity has not yet been released. The accident is still under ongoing investigation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
