Woman Dies when Hit by Tractor Trailer in Accident on I-79

May 9, 2011 - Harrison County, W.Va. - One woman was killed early Saturday morning when she was struck by a tractor trailer and struck again by a second vehicle.

WDTV reports that the fatal accident happened at about 3:45 a.m. Saturday on Interstate 79 near Exit 117, the Anmoore Exit. According to police, the woman was walking in the middle of the northbound lane of the interstate at the time of the deadly accident on I-79.

The woman was first hit by a tractor trailer then hit again by a Chrysler Town and Country Mini Van. The woman was pronounced dead on the scene. Her body was taken to United Hospital Center for evaluation by a medical examiner.

The woman has not yet been identified.

The northbound lane of I-79 was blocked to traffic for more than two hours while crews worked to investigate the scene.

Sheriff's deputies said they are unsure why the woman was walking on the interstate.

The accident remains under investigation by the Harrison County Sheriff's Department. No charges will be filed in connection with the accident.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
