Woman Dies, Child Critically Injured After Fayette County Crash

September 12, 2011 - Fayette County, W.Va. - A car accident left a woman dead and sent a 5-year-old girl to the hospital on Thursday, September 8.

The Charleston Gazette reports that the accident happened at about 6 p.m. on W.Va. 612 at U.S. 19. Mary Shrewsberry, of Scarbro, was driving her Chevrolet Cavalier when she attempted to turn onto U.S. 19 and was hit from behind by a Pontiac sedan.

Shrewsberry was transported to Plateau Medical Center immediately following the accident. She was later pronounced dead in the hospital.

A 5-year-old girl who was riding in Shrewsberry's vehicle had to be flown to CAMC General Hospital via helicopter. Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler said that the child was in critical condition.

The 2 juvenile occupants of the Pontiac were not injured in the accident.

As of Friday, September 9, no charges had been filed in connection with this accident. The accident is under ongoing investigation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
