West Virginia in Top 10 Most Dangerous States for Guns

Posted on Aug 27, 2010

West Virginia was named in the top 10 most dangerous states for guns based on the number of gun-related deaths. The other states ranked as being most dangerous for gun-related fatalities include:

  • Louisiana;
  • Mississippi;
  • Alaska;
  • Alabama;
  • Nevada;
  • Arkansas;
  • Tennessee;
  • New Mexico; and
  • Arizona

West Virginia was ranked number 10 with statistics showing that there are nearly 15 deaths per 100,000 residents. The national average for the country is 10.3 deaths per 100,000 population. Although murder is often the reason for a gun-related death, the total number of gun fatalities is also the result of accidents or other unknown causes.

In 2004, the National Center for Health Statistics reported that in the United States there were 649 accidental gun-related fatalities and another 235 fatalities from a gun that were listed under "unknown causes".
