Two Injured When Motorcycle Crashes on I-79 in Mon County

July 5, 2011 - Mon County, W.Va. - A motorcycle accident in Mon County sent 2 people to the hospital Saturday.

WDTV reports that the accident occurred shortly after 12 p.m. on Interstate 77, near the 144 mile marker. According to officials on the scene, the motorcycle was travelling on the interstate when its rear tire blew out, causing the vehicle to crash.

Two people were riding the motorcycle at the time of the accident that were both reported injured after the motorcycle crashed.

The passenger, Linda Goddard, fell off of the motorcycle when it crashed and had to be flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital for treatment. Goddard's medical condition is unknown at this time. The motorcycle's driver, Richard Villemaire, was also transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital. Villemaire is said to have suffered minor injuries.

Police said that both Goddard and Villemaire were wearing helmets at the time of the accident. Parts of Interstate 79 were blocked to traffic for about 2 hours after the incident.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
