Student Injured in Ritchie County Bus Crash in Harrisville

Posted on Feb 08, 2011

February 8, 2011 - Harrisville, WV - One student was injured and a Ritchie County bus driver taken to the hospital with back injuries when their school bus crashed into a ditch on January 26.

WBOY12 News reports the Ritchie County bus crash took place mid-afternoon on Route 16 just outside Harrisville. Twenty-four students were on board when the driver approached a left curve and lost control. The school bus skidded, sending the rear end into a guard rail and forcing the bus across the northbound lane before it ended up in a ditch and totaled. The vehicle stopped after striking a tree on the embankment.

An injured student reported a nose injury and was released to return home with her parents. An additional bus came to transport the students to Harrisville Elementary School for evaluation by Emergency Medical Services where the parents were asked to provide medical releases.

The driver of the school bus experienced back pain and was transported to a Parkersburg hospital and later released. Ritchie County authorities confirmed 14 other accidents in the area at the same time, citing treacherous road conditions as a likely cause.

Poor weather conditions can create many hazards for drivers, causing an increase in serious accidents and injuries. If your child is injured while traveling on a school bus, you may be able to hold the school board liable for allowing their busses to operate in hazardous weather conditions. An experienced Clarksburg injury attorney can help you file a claim against a government entity such as the school if your child suffers injury because of their negligence.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia. While this was a 6% decrease from 2008, fatal vehicle accidents still do occur and can be devastating to a family.
