STIHL Recalls 5,000 Defective Chainsaws

January 4, 2011 - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of nearly 5,000 defective chainsaws because the tools pose a serious and extraneous risk to users and bystanders.

According to a notice on InfoZine.com, STIHL Incorporated-a company based in Virginia Beach, Va.-is cooperating with the nationwide recall of its STIHL MS 361C chainsaws (the C-Q version). The dangerous product is being recalled because of a manufacturing defect that can cause the throttle trigger to "stick" even after the user has released the lever. This can cause the engine to continue running and turn the chain. Naturally, this poses a serious risk of laceration to the user and those around the user.

So far, there have been 3 reports of the trigger sticking on the defective chainsaws. However, there have been no reports of serious injury due to the chainsaws at this time.

The recalled chainsaws were sold at STIHL dealers throughout the country from February 2004 through August 2009. They retailed for about $640. Consumers are urged to immediately cease use and take the unit to a licensed STIHL dealer for a free repair.
