Several Injuries in Monongalia 3-Vehicle Car Crash on I-79

July 7, 2011 - Monongalia County, W.Va. - Several people were injured Tuesday afternoon in a 3-vehicle car crash in Monongalia County.

WDTV reports that the accident happened at about 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 79, near the 155 mile marker. According to Westover Police, 2 vehicles collided in the northbound lanes of traffic.

One of the vehicles ended up in the median while the second vehicle was pushed into the southbound lanes, where it crashed into a truck head on.

It is unclear exactly how many people were injured in the accident. Emergency 911 officials said that as many as 4 people may have been taken to local hospitals following the accident. There is no word on the conditions of any of the injured people.

The identities of those involved in the accident have not yet been released. The cause of the accident remains to be determined as it is under ongoing investigation by Westover Police.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
