Semi-Truck Flips in I-64 Truck Accident Dumping Equipment onto Roadway

April 29, 2011 - Huntington, W.Va. - A semi-truck overturned Wednesday afternoon, causing traffic jams. At the time of this posting, there was no official word on the extent of any injuries incurred as a result of the highway truck crash.

WBOY reports that the accident happened at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday on Interstate 64 in Huntington. The driver of a semi-truck apparently lost control of the vehicle, causing it to flip.

According to witnesses on the scene, the semi was carrying a "large piece of machinery" at the time of the I-64 truck accident. The machinery fell off onto the highway during the crash. There have been no warnings in regard to any chemical hazards that may have been connected with the accident.

It is unclear whether anyone was injured in the crash.

The identities of those involved in the accident have not been released.

The westbound lanes of Interstate 64 were blocked for some time following the accident while crews worked to clear the scene. The lanes have since been reopened.

The cause of the accident has not yet been determined. The crash is under ongoing investigation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
