Recalled Propane Gas Tanks Lack Odorant to Alert of Gas Leaks

Posted on Jan 26, 2011

January 25, 2011 - Consumers who purchased a new propane gas cylinder between February 25, 2010 and September 30, 2010 should be aware of a potential hazard in the case of a gas leak.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has urged the manufacturer, Aux Sable Liquid Products, to issue a voluntary recall after 700 rail cars' worth of propane tanks were found to lack a critical safety feature. An odorant is added to propane gas tanks to allow consumers to detect a gas leak but many of the tanks lack this component.

The defective storage tanks were sold in the following states:

  • Connecticut;
  • Delaware;
  • Maine;
  • Maryland;
  • Massachusetts;
  • New Hampshire;
  • New Jersey;
  • New York;
  • North Carolina;
  • Pennsylvania;
  • Rhode Island;
  • Tennessee;
  • Vermont; and
  • Virginia.

Only consumers who have purchased a tank between February 2010 and September 2010 and have not refilled it should be concerned with the recall. If you purchased a unit and have not refilled it, you may contact Aux Sable to arrange a free inspection. If your unit is found to lack sufficient levels of odorant, a replacement will be provided free of charge. Questions about the recall can be directed to Aux Sable at 1-866-473-7612 or the Propane Alert website.

Gas leaks are not only potential fire hazards but can also be dangerous to your health. An undetected gas leak can ignite with electrical or flame exposure and many gasses such as propane are harmful when inhaled.
