Recalled GE Dehumidifiers Pose Fire Hazard, Cause Property Damage

Posted on Jan 25, 2011

January 25, 2011 - The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled more than 190,000 dehumidifiers manufactured under the GE and CEM Professional Series brands.

The CPSC announced a voluntary recall of numerous models and serial numbers manufactured between November 2006 and August 2007 and during April 2008. Fourteen reports have been issued in which smoke and fumes were emitted from the unit and 8 reports involved flames. In 6 of the flame incidents, property damage occurred beyond the actual unit.

The GE model numbers affected include:

  • AHK30LK;
  • AHW30LK;
  • AHM30LK;
  • AHK40LK;
  • AHH40LK; and
  • AHM40LK.

The GE serial numbers start with the following:

  • VL1;
  • ZL1;
  • AM1;
  • DM1;
  • FM1;
  • GM1;
  • HM1;
  • LM1;
  • MM1; and
  • RM1.

Also included in the recall is the CEM "Professional Series" model PS7830 with a serial number from C10102336010841 4100001 to C10102336010841 5103037.

The defective dehumidifiers were sold at Walmart, Sam's Club, Home Depot, Menards and several other mass retailers between February 2007 and June 2009. If you purchased a dehumidifier during this time, it is advised you check to see if your unit is listed in the recall. Consumers should contact the manufacturer, GD Midea Air Conditioning Equipment Ltd. at 1-877-593-8721 or visit their website at www.recallverification.com to have their product repaired.

No reports of injuries have been submitted but the risk is high if the fire is not properly extinguished or is allowed to spread beyond the unit. Defective equipment that produces flames can be dangerous to extinguish, as most of these items are electrical and water use should be avoided.
