Recall on DePuy Hip System

September 30, 2010 -There is a voluntary recall on the DePuy Hip System because data indicate it causes additional medical problems. It was found to lead to pain and other symptoms, along with the possible need for a second hip replacement surgery.

DePuy Companies report that the recall affects the ASR XL Acetabular total hip replacement and DePuy ASR hip resurfacing systems done after July 2003. Any patient who has gone through hip replacement surgery with one of these systems should contact their orthopedic surgeon.

DePuy, the company which manufactures the hip replacement systems, issued the recall because of recent data which revealed that within 5 years of a hip procedure, about 12% of the patients who received the resurfacing system and 13% of the patients who received the total hip replacement system required a second surgery. This is often referred to as revision surgery.

DePuy states on its website that it plans to cover reasonable treatment and monitoring costs if patients do need ASR recall services. For more detailed information, patients are recommended to contact the DePuy ASR Help Line.
