One Injured When Minivan Hits Tractor Trailer During I-79 Accident

May 11, 2011 - Monongalia County, W.Va. - One person was sent to the hospital after a vehicle caught fire on Interstate 79.

WDTV reports that the accident happened at about 7:20 a.m. Tuesday on Interstate 79, near mile marker 144, in Monongalia County. According to Police, a minivan was traveling on I-79 when its driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into the rear of a tractor trailer.

The minivan caught fire on impact.

The driver of the minivan was injured in the I-79 accident and had to be transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital treatment. The driver suffered only minor injuries.

The identities of those involved in the accident have not yet been released.

Traffic was backed up for over an hour following the accident as crews worked to clear the scene.

The accident is under ongoing investigation. All further investigations are being handled by deputies of the Monongalia County Sheriff's Department.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
