One Dies in I-79 Crash in Bridgeport, Another Injured in Wreck

May 26, 2011 - Bridgeport, W.Va. - One person was killed and another was injured Tuesday in a crash in Bridgeport.

WDTV reports that the accident happened at about 4 p.m. Tuesday on Interstate 79 near the 125 mile marker. A vehicle was traveling northbound on I-79 when its driver lost control. The vehicle then went off of the roadway and up a hill, where it crashed into a bridge.

One person was killed in the accident. That person was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second person was injured in the crash. The injured person was transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital immediately following the accident. There is no word on the extent of their injuries.

The identities of those involved in the accident have not yet been released.

Only one vehicle was involved in the accident and no further injuries have been reported.

Accident reconstruction specialists were on the scene for several hours following the accident. The accident is under ongoing investigation by Bridgeport Police.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
