Officer Injured in Morgantown DUI Accident When Car Slams into Cruiser

May 25, 2011 - Morgantown, W.Va. - A Granville police officer was injured Monday when a vehicle crashed into his cruiser in Morgantown.

WBOY reports that the accident happened at about 3 a.m. Monday at the intersection of University Towne Center Drive and Chaplin Road. David Fortney, 41, of Westover, crashed his vehicle into the rear of the Granville police cruiser when the cruiser was stopped at the intersection.

John Groves, the officer in the cruiser, was suffering neck pain after the Morgantown DUI accident and had to be taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown.

According to authorities, Fortney was arrested on charges of first-offence driving under the influence, DUI with injury and failure to maintain control of a vehicle.

Magistrate Sandy Holepit has arraigned Fortney with a bond set at $3,600.

The accident remains under investigation. Investigations are being handled by deputies of the Monongalia Sheriff's Department. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to please contact local police.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
