Multi-Car Crash in Charleston on I-77 Injures At Least One

May 27, 2011 - Charleston W.Va. - A multi-car pileup caused an unknown number of injuries Thursday evening in Charleston.

The Charleston Gazette reports that the accident happened at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday on Interstate 77, near mile marker 97, in Charleston. Dispatchers said that about four or five cars reportedly collided in the northbound lanes of the interstate during the crash in Charleston.

Multiple rescue crews were on the scene of the accident, but reports of injuries have not yet been confirmed. Dispatchers said at least one 14-year-old girl was suffering from chest pains as a result of the accident. Further details have not yet been made available.

Just how many people were involved in the accident is not yet clear. No identities had been released as of late Thursday night.

The cause of the accident is unclear. The accident is under ongoing investigation by authorities in Charleston.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
