Posted on Aug 19, 2010

Aug. 19, 2010 - Preston County, W. Va. - A 51-year-old man was killed when his all-terrain vehicle (ATV) hit a tree in Preston County on July 22. Mark Steven Gould was traveling westward on his Yamaha ATV around the area of Bull Run when he lost control of his vehicle.

Gould's ATV ran off the road and hit a tree. He was not wearing a helmet and authorities believe that alcohol may have been a factor. Gould died from the injuries he sustained.

This ATV accident is still under investigation by the Preston County Sherriff's department.

ATVs are a great way to enjoy off-road riding. However, the reality is that they can also be a dangerous mode of transportation. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that in the last 2 decades there have been more than 6,000 deaths as a result of injuries from ATV accidents.

In addition, every year there are more than 100,000 people who are seen in the emergency room because of ATV-related injuries. In about 30% of these accidents children are injured.
