Man Killed in Harrison County ATV Accident

July 11, 2011 - Harrison County, W.Va. - An ATV accident in Harrison County left a man fatal injured Sunday morning.

WDTV reports that the body of a man was found at about 12:50 p.m. on Sunday, off of Shaffer's Hollow Road between Little Elk Creek and Jones' Run. Police said that the accident likely happened earlier Sunday morning.

Sheriff's deputies said the man, 43, of Lumberport, was driving his ATV when he lost control of the vehicle, crashed into a tree and went over an embankment. The man was thrown from the ATV during the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body had been transported to United Hospital Center for further examination by a County Medical Examiner.

The accident was investiaged by the Harrison County Sheriff's Department with the assistance of West Virginia State Police. Officials from the Lumberport Fire Department and Harrison County EMS were also on the scene in response to the accident.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
