Man Flown to Hospital after Single-Car Crash in Excelsiur

July 8, 2011 - Excelsiur, W.Va. - A single-vehicle car crash in Upshur County left a man seriously injured Thursday afternoon.

WDTV reports that the accident happened at about 3 p.m. on Route 151 in Excelsiur. According to police, the driver of the vehicle was attempting to take a turn when he lost control, causing the vehicle to run off of the roadway.

The vehicle crashed into an embankment and overturned. It then went down a hill and away from the roadway. The driver was thrown from his vehicle during the crash. He had to be flown to a local hospital immediately following.

There is no word on the medical condition of the injured man and his identity has not yet been released. Only a single vehicle was involved in the crash and so far no further injuries have been reported.

Route 151 was blocked to traffic for about an hour after the car crash while emergency response crews worked to clear the scene.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
