Hunter Safety Increased with New West Virginia Hunting Regulations

The Charleston Gazette reports that hunter safety has increased with new West Virginia hunting regulations. The regulations address the risk of accidental injury or death during hunting season, which is now well underway.

The Division of Natural Resources' Law Enforcement Section says that hunter shooting accidents in West Virginia have decreased significantly over the past few decades.

Some of the credit is being given to 2 changes in West Virginia's hunting regulations. The first regulation requires deer hunters to wear at least 400 square inches of fluorescent orange clothing. This increases their visibility and reduces the risk of an accidental shooting.

The other change in West Virginia's hunting regulations is that first-time hunters must take a 10-hour hunter safety education course. This course focuses on hunter safety and provides insight on accident and injury prevention.

While these changes in hunting regulations have resulted in a decrease in accidental shootings, the risk of injury from other hunting accidents continues to cause concern. Falls from tree stands, ATV accidents and heart attacks continue to be a source of many hunting accidents or hunting deaths in West Virginia.
