High School Senior Killed in 2-Vehicle Car Accident in Putnam

September 6, 2011 - Putnam County, W.Va. - A Hurricane High School senior died and another was injured on Thursday, September 1, in a 2-vehicle car accident.

A WBOY news story reported that the accident happened on Route 34 when the 2 vehicles crashed into each other on the roadway. Further details as to what caused the accident are not yet obtainable.

Hurricane High School Principal Dick Campbell recently confirmed that the victim was Hurricane High School senior Kara Stowers. Stowers was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the second vehicle received minor injuries in the accident and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Officials said that Stowers may have been distracted at the time of the accident.

A candlelight service is being planned for Stower. The service will take place at Hurricane High School Tuesday at dusk.

The accident is under ongoing investigation by the Putnam County Sheriff's Department.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
