Head-On Collision in Roane County Kills 1, Injures 3

August 2, 2011 - Roane County, W.Va. - An accident left a person dead and 3 people injured on Monday.

WBOY reports that the accident happened at about 1:15 p.m. on Route 36, between Wallback and Newton, in Roane County. A Jeep Cherokee was driving on the roadway when it was struck by a pickup truck head-on.

The driver of the Cherokee, Kary Smith, 38, was killed in the accident. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three more people were injured as a result of the accident and had to be taken to a hospital in Charleston for treatment. The medical conditions of the injured people are unknown at this time.

According to police, it appears that the driver of the Cherokee did not hit the vehicle's brakes before the collision. Police said this could have been due to a medical condition.

The accident is under ongoing investigation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
