Fiery Single-Vehicle Accident in Lewis County Sends 1 to Hospital

May 25, 2011 - Lewis County, W.Va. - One woman was hospitalized Monday following a single-vehicle accident in Lewis County.

WDTV reports that the accident happened on Interstate 79 near the 105 mile marker. According to Violet Chapman, of Chester, her vehicle hit the rumble strips on the left side of the road, causing her to lose control.

Chapman then over corrected and the car veered across the roadway to crash into the far guardrail, where it immediately burst into flames.

Chapman, her daughter and her two grandchildren were in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Chapman had to be flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital for treatment. Her injuries have been described as non-life threatening.

Chapman's daughter and grandchildren were taken to Stonewall Memorial Hospital immediately following the accident. They have since been treated and released.

Only one vehicle was involved in the accident and no further injuries have been reported.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
