Elderly Man Hospitalized after Hit by Van in Huntington

August 1, 2011 - Huntington, W.Va. - An elderly man was injured Sunday, July 31, 2011, when his motorized wheelchair was struck by a vehicle in Huntington.

WBOY reports that the accident happened at about 1:30 p.m. on Adams Avenue, near Hardees. The elderly man was attempting to cross the street in his motorized wheelchair, when he was hit by an oncoming van.

The man was injured in the accident and had to be transported to a local hospital for treatment. The extent of his injuries is unknown at this time. His identity has also not yet been released.

The identity of the van driver is also unknown although, witnesses on the scene said that the driver was male.

Adams Avenue was blocked to traffic for some time following the accident, while emergency response crews worked to clear the scene. The accident is under ongoing investigation and is being handled by authorities in Huntington.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
