Driver Injured When Cattle Truck Overturns on Route 19

April 12, 2011 - Lewis County, W.Va. - One man went to the hospital Sunday afternoon following an accident that shut down part of Route 19.

WDTV reports that the accident occurred at about 1 p.m. Sunday on Route 19. The crash occurred in the area between Jane Lew and Weston. A cattle truck was traveling eastbound on the roadway when its driver lost control of the vehicle.

The truck went into a ditch then struck the edge of a driveway, causing it to flip onto its side and hit a garage.

According to authorities, the driver of the cattle truck did not suffer life-threatening injuries and transported himself to seek medical care. He treated for an ear injury.

Firefighters said the truck was carrying an estimated 20 cows at the time of the accident. One of the cows received internal injuries as a result of the crash and had to be euthanized.

Route 19 was blocked to traffic for several hours following the accident.

State police and officials from the Jane Lew and Weston fire departments were on the scene in response to the accident.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
