Driver Flees Scene After Monongalia Motorcycle Accident on I-79 Injures 2

July 19, 2011 - Monongalia County, W. Va - A motorcycle accident sent 2 people to the hospital Sunday morning. Officials are still searching for the man who should be held liable.

WDTV reports that the accident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. on Interstate 79 by the 158 mile marker. According to Sheriff's deputies, a married couple was riding on the motorcycle that was pulling a trailer northbound on the interstate.

A pickup truck then pulled into the motorcycle's lane, colliding with the trailer. The driver of the motorcycle lost control and both motorcycle and trailer crashed into the median.

Michael Elkins, 51, and his wife Tina Elkins, 48, were both injured in the accident. The couple had to be taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital for their injuries.

The driver of the pickup truck fled the scene. The driver has been described as a Caucasian male with short hair who may have had a mustache. His truck is a newer model silver Dodge, which witnesses described as being roughly the same size as a Ford F-150.

Witnesses or those with information regarding the accident have been asked to contact the Monongalia County Sheriff's Department.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
