DeVilbiss Air Compressor Recalled Because of Fire Hazards

February 18, 2011 - DeVilbiss, in conjunction with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), is voluntarily recalling roughly 460,000 air compressors after it was discovered that they pose a significant fire hazard.

The recalled air compressors contain a defect in their motors that can cause the product to overheat and may cause a fire.

The recalled air compressors were manufactured by DeVilbiss Air Power Company of Jackson, Tennessee and sold under a variety of brand names, including:

Craftsman;
Delta Shopmaster;
DeVilbiss; and
Husky and Porter-Cable.

As of this posting, DeVilbiss had received 9 reports of overheating motors in the recalled air compressors, which included 3 reports of property damage as a result of fires. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

The recalled air compressors were available for purchase at various home centers nationwide under the brand names DeVilbiss, Porter-Cable, Husky and Delta Shopmaster from January 2003 through December 2004 and retailed at $199 to $299. The Craftsman-brand recalled air compressors were sold nationwide at Sears stores from September 2000 through December 2005 and retailed for $199 to $229.

The brand that the recalled air compressors were sold under will determine who consumers should contact regarding a refund for this dangerous product. Consumers who purchased the recalled air compressors with the brand names of DeVilbiss, Porter-Cable, or Husky and Delta should contact DeVilbiss at 866- 220-5627 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. (ET) Monday through Friday. You can also visit the brand's website at www.porter-cable.com or www.devap.com.

If you purchased the air compressor under the Craftsman brand, you should call Sears at 1-888-279-8013, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. (CT) and Saturday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. (CT). You can also contact them via their website at www.sears.com.
