Clarksburg Car Accident Hospitalizes 3

August 10, 2011 - Clarksburg, W.Va. - An accident in Clarksburg sent 3 people to the hospital Tuesday, August 9.

WDTV reports that the accident happened at about 4 p.m. on Route 50. According to police on the scene, a car was travelling eastbound at a high rate of speed when it crashed into the rear of an SUV.

Three people were injured in the accident. The 2 people in the car were trapped in their vehicle following the accident. They had to be cut free by emergency response crews.

The passenger in the car had to be flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital to be treated for serious injuries while the driver was transported to United Hospital Center. The driver of the SUV was also transported to United Hospital Center. There is no word on the extent of their injuries.

Route 50 East was blocked to traffic for more than an hour following the accident as crews worked to clear the scene. The accident remains under investigation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
