February 18, 2011 - The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), along with AmerTac, is voluntarily recalling about 261,000 LED night lights because of safety hazards, including fire risks and burn injuries.
According to reports by the importer and the CPSC, the recalled night lights have electrical short circuits that can cause the night lights to overheat, smolder or even melt. This electrical issue can result in a fire and burn injuries. The recalled night lights were manufactured in China.
So far, 18 reports related to the recalled AmerTac night lights have been filed with the importer. The complaints detail instances in which the night lights began to smoke, melt, burn or char. These reports include 3 instances of minor property damage and 1 burn injury.
The recalled night lights were imported by American Tack & Hardware Co. Inc. (AmerTac), of Saddle River, New Jersey. The recall itself applies to 3 different models of night lights with the letters KML molded onto the back of the device. Only night lights with KML are included in this particular product recall.
The model numbers of the recalled AmerTac night lights include:
- 71194; and
All 3 of the recalled night light models are branded with KML, ETL and the AmerTac logo, as well as the product model number on the back of the night lights' plastic housing. The night lights were sold at various home centers, hardware stores and lighting showrooms throughout the United States for around $7 between March 2009 and January 2011.
Consumers are advised to stop using the recalled night lights immediately in addition to unplugging them from the wall.
