Accident Shuts Down I-77 in Jackson County, Injuries Unknown

November 4, 2011 - Jackson County, W.Va. - Injuries are unknown in an accident that blocked part of Interstate 77 on Thursday, November 3.

WSAZ reports that the accident happened Thursday evening on Interstate 77 that involved at least 3 vehicles including 2 cars and a tractor-trailer. Police said that the vehicles crashed in the southbound lanes of the interstate. Details of how the accident occurred are not yet available.

Reports do not indicate how many people were involved in this accident. At least one person was taken to the hospital for immediate medical attention. His or her injuries are currently unknown.

There has been no word on whether or not any charges will be filed in connection with this accident. The accident remains in stages of investigation by local authorities.

The southbound lanes of the interstate, about 5 miles north of the Silverton exit, were blocked to traffic for some time following the accident.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
