3 Women Die When Car Rear-Ended By Tanker Truck on I-77 Bridge

April 21, 2011 - Williamstown, W.Va. - Three people died Wednesday when a passenger car was rear-ended by a tanker truck on I-77 and burst into flames.

WDTV reports that the fatal truck accident occurred on the Interstate 77 bridge that connects West Virginia to Ohio. According to investigators, a tanker truck that was carrying liquid nitrogen was traveling across the bridge when it crashed into the back of a smaller vehicle.

The tanker pushed the car along the bridge a distance before the car was crushed against the median. The wreck then burst into flames.

Three women who were in the smaller vehicle at the time of the accident died on the scene. They have not yet been identified.

The three women were transported to the Coroner's Office in Charleston where officials are working to identify them and contact family members. The car was registered to an Ohio owner.

The driver of the tanker escaped the wreck with only scratches and no serious injuries.

The bridge was inspected following the accident. Officials say it remains safe for traffic.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
