2 Children Die in Minivan Rollover Accident in Clendenin

Sept. 10, 2010 - Clendenin, W.Va. - Carla Aiken said she never meant to endanger her 2 children who were tragically killed in a minivan rollover crash on I-79 near Clendenin.

At the time of the crash, the family van was transporting Aiken, her 7-year-old son Logan, 6-year-old daughter Haley, 10-year-old son Ethan, 74-year-old grandmother Hazel, and 27-year-old boyfriend Christopher. The family was traveling from vacation in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on August 17 when the crash occurred.

During the trip, Logan had fallen ill and thrown up on the booster seats the younger 2 children were traveling in. Aiken removed them from the child restraints and had them seated on a sleeping bag on the backseat of the minivan.

Aiken claims she did not fall asleep, and police do not believe speed or intoxication were a factor when she lost control of the vehicle just before the crash. The minivan went over the median and into a small ravine where it rolled several times. Logan and Haley were thrown from the vehicle, suffering fatal injuries. Hazel was hospitalized after the accident. The oldest child, Aiken's boyfriend, and Aiken herself suffered minor injury and were treated and released.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 380 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
