$125k Fine for Dangerous Drawstrings in Children’s Sweatshirts

A failure to report drawstrings in children's sweatshirts has resulted in a $125,000 civil penalty. Pro-Pac Distributing Corporation was fined for not providing information on this potential hazard, which could have been a clear case of product liability, had it led to serious injuries or death.

Federal law requires that anyone involved in the manufacturing, design or selling of a product must report potential safety hazards. Drawstrings in children's clothing pose a risk of entangling or strangling a child. Because of this, the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a statement in May, 2006 that drawstrings in children's clothing would be considered defective.
