1 Killed After Car and Coal Truck Collide in Randolph County

July 13, 2011 - Randolph County, W.Va. - A person was killed early Tuesday morning in a Randolph County accident that involved a car and a coal truck.

WBOY reports that the accident happened at the intersection of county Route 151 and Route 33, around 5:00 a.m. Officials said that a young man age 20, of Jane Lew, was attempting to turn onto Route 33 from Route 151 and failed to yield to oncoming traffic. His car was immediately struck by a coal truck, causing both vehicles to crash on the median.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the coal truck was not reported injured. The truck driver's identity has not yet been released. The accident remains under investigation and is being handled by State Police.

Officials with Randolph County EMS and the Division of Highways as well as emergency response crews from Coalton and Junior were on the scene in response to the accident.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
