1 Dead, 3 Injured in Hernshaw Car Accident

July 28, 2011 - Hernshaw, W.Va. - A person was killed and 3 more were taken to the hospital following an accident involving a Boone County ambulance.

WSAZ reports that the accident happened shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday on Lens Creek Road, near the intersection of Bell Cove Road, in Hernshaw. Officials said that 2 trucks collided head-on in the roadway. The ambulance, which was carrying a patient at the time, was then struck by one or both of the vehicles.

One person was killed in the accident. That person was pronounced dead at the scene. Three people had to be transported to the hospital following the accident. One of those people was the patient who had been in the ambulance. The other 2 people were trapped in their vehicle and had to be released by emergency response crews.

Lens Creek road was closed for several hours following the accident. The accident is under ongoing investigation by authorities in Kanawha County.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
