February 3, 2012 – Charleston, W.Va. – The deputy chief of operations at South Central Regional Jail spent the night behind bars in his own jail after being arrested on DUI charges on Thursday, February 2.
WSAZ reports that the incident occurred early Thursday morning on 6th Avenue. A police officer pulled over John King II after King’s vehicle was seen swerving back and forth across the roadway, nearly hitting several parked cars in the process.
The officer said that he could smell a strong odor of alcohol, and that King’s eyes were bloodshot and his speech was slurred. King failed parts of all 3 field sobriety tests. When the officer administered a breath test on the scene, King had a blood-alcohol level of .191.
This is King’s second DUI charge in the past year. He was also charged with aggravated DUI in April.
The Kanawha County Magistrate Court arraigned King on the new charge Thursday morning. King’s bond is set at $500.
A spokesperson with the West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety said that King is no longer employed by the state.

February 3, 2012 – Huntington, W.Va. – A person received injuries following a car accident in an intersection that involved 2 vehicles on Wednesday, February 1.
WOWKTV reports that the incident occurred shortly after 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of 12th Avenue and Hal Greer Boulevard, near Cabell Huntington Hospital. Officials said that two vehicles collided in the intersection. Additional details of how the accident occurred are not available at this moment.
A person was injured as a result of the accident. Officials who were called to the scene, indicate that the victim suffered minor injuries. The identity of the injured person has been concealed.
Hal Greer Boulevardwas blocked to traffic for a brief time after the crash. The roadway has since been reopened.

WBOY states that the incident happened shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Point Marion Road, near the Pennsylvania state line. Officials with the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department indicate that a vehicle was driving in the wrong direction in the southbound lane when it crashed into a second vehicle head on.
The impact of the accident caused 4 people to suffer injuries. A man and 3 women had to be taken to an area hospital following the collision. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.
The names of those involved in the accident have not yet been revealed.

February 1, 2012 – Blue Creek, W.Va. – Police are still looking for the driver of a vehicle that was involved in a fatal hit and run accident on Friday, January 27.
The Charleston Gazette reports that the incident occurred at about 11:20 p.m. in the 5100 block of Elk River Road, just north of Blue Creek Road. The pedestrian, Dennis Glen James, 47, was crossing the road, near the Blue Creek Post office, when he was hit by an oncoming vehicle.
The vehicle left the scene without stopping.
James was rushed to CAMC GeneralHospital immediately following the accident. He was later pronounced dead.
Police said that the vehicle in question may be a dark-colored passenger car. A witness said that the vehicle’s tail lights may have resembled those of a Dodge Neon. The vehicle should be damaged on the front driver’s side and headlight areas.

WSAZ reports that the accident happened shortly before 10:30 p.m. on the Kanawha Turnpike (U.S. 60), nearChestnut Street. Police on the scene said that a silver truck went through a red light and crashed into a green Ford SUV. The SUV had been attempting to make a legal right turn at the intersection.
Due to the impact of the accident, a person was left with injuries. The victim was transported to a local hospital after complaining of pain at the scene. The condition of the injured person is unknown at this time.
The driver of the silver truck received a DUI charge in connection with this accident.
The Kanawha Turnpike was shut down for some time following the incident. All lanes have since been reopened.

January 27, 2012 – Worthington, W.Va. – A man was wounded when his vehicle overturned during the afternoon on Thursday, January 26.
WDTV reports that the incident happened at about 1:30 p.m. on Route 19. Officials said that an SUV was travelling northbound on the road when its driver lost control of his vehicle, resulting in it crashing into a utility pole. The SUV then rolled over, landing on the driver’s side.
The man that was driving the SUV was injured in the accident. He had to be transported via medical helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital to seek treatment. The extent of his injuries is currently unknown. The driver’s identity has not been released.
Residents in the area had no power for about an hour following the accident while the power company worked to repair the phone lines.
The root of the accident remains to be determined and is under investigation by the Marion County Sheriff’s Department.

January 27, 2012 – Ranson, W.Va. – A teenage pizza delivery boy was fatally injured in a head-on car accident on Sunday, January 22.
The Herald-Mail reports that the accident happened at about 7:15 p.m. Alfredo Maya, owner of Brothers Pizza 2, said that James Fletcher, 17, of Charles Town, was en route to make a delivery when the crash occurred.
According to Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department Chief of Staff Jesse Jones, Fletcher’s Ford Escort was involved in a head-on collision in the roadway.
Fletcher was killed in the accident. He was declared dead at the scene. The second driver involved in the accident sustained injuries and was transported to Jefferson Memorial Hospital.
Fletcher was a student at Washington High School. He had been working at Brothers Pizza 2 for less than a week before the accident happened. Previously, he worked as a dishwasher at The Mediterranean Café, another restaurant owned by Maya, but had transferred in order to work with his father, the pizza shop’s manager.
The accident is under ongoing investigation.

January 26, 2012 – Kanawha County, W.Va. – On Monday night, January 23, 4 people, including a young child, were involved in DUI accident, which resulted in injuries.
The Charleston Gazette reports that the accident happened at about 7:30 p.m. on Hughes Creek Road. Officials said that a Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by 18-year-old Steven Adam Young, of St. Albans, went through a stop sign and collided with a 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
Young, his passenger 18-year-old Alisha Smith, and 4-year-old Bryland Smith were all injured in the crash. The Chevrolet’s driver 17-year-old Kayla Burdette was also injured. Lt. Sean Crosier said that all 4 victims had to be transported to CAMC General Hospital to be treated for head, neck, and back injuries.
According to Crosier, Young admitted to having consumed vodka prior to the crash. Young has been charged with a DUI, driving with a suspended license, improper registration, and being uninsured.

January 25, 2012 – Boothsville, W.Va. – A single-vehicle car crash, late at night on Monday, January 23, left 4 people suffering injuries.
WBOY reports that the accident happened at about 11:30 p.m. night on Horner’s Run. According to police, a vehicle was driving along the roadway when a deer entered its path. The vehicle veered off the road in an attempt to avoid the deer, causing the vehicle to crash into a tree.
The vehicle’s driver, Charles Bonner Jr., 29, of Fairmont, was transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. Bonner has since been treated and released.
Reports indicate that 3 other passengers also suffered wounds in the accident. All are said to have suffered non-life threatening injuries as well. The names of the injured passengers have not been publically released.
Officials said that alcohol and drugs are not suspected to have been primary factors in the crash. West Virginia State Police were on the scene.

January 24, 2012 – Monongalia County, W.Va. – A man was seriously injured early in the morning on Sunday, January 22, when he was struck by a car.
A news story on WBOY indicates that the incident happened shortly after 2 a.m. on Van Voorhis Road. Witnesses on the scene said that 24-year-old Nicholas Musick ran into the roadway and into the path of an approaching vehicle. The vehicle’s driver, Robert Shad, of Maryland, could not stop in time and crashed right into Musick.
Musick suffered serious injuries in the accident and had to be taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital to receive medical treatment.
Shad was not reported to have suffered injuries in the accident.
There has been no information on whether or not charges will be filed in relation to this accident. The accident is under ongoing investigation by officials with the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department.
