October 2016 Celebrating Volunteers Winner

Ann Kirby of

Amy's Attic Clarksburg West Virginia

Ann Kirby Gretchen Ross Tim Miley Celebrating Volunteer Amy's Attic Clarksburg WV     As the most recent down turn in our economy has affected hundreds of West Virginians, many in our area, vital resources have become more difficult to come across.  Families all across our region are becoming more reliant on private organizations to assist them in meeting their basic needs of food, shelter and clothing.  One of the many organizations that stepped up years ago, was the Clarksburg League For Service.  What began as a system to help support new babies and their mothers, as created by Amy Vance in 1934, to today’s storefront that assists hundreds of families, including new mothers and school children, to make ends meet and survive, if not thrive in our communities.  Amy’s Attic was created in 2004 to emulate the work of Amy Vance in gathering needed items for low income and struggling families.  The project was taken on and pushed forward by Ann Kirby who has spent countless hours setting up a shop, fundraising, building relationships and gathering items to make them available through an intricate network of community resource services in Harrison County.

Amy's Attic Assists Harrison County School System

WBOY - Clarksburg, Morgantown: News, Sports, Weather

Amy’s Attic has become a key part in assisting families to survive the everyday struggles in providing clothes, food, cleaning supplies, baby items and other essentials.  Utilizing the social services network in the county, along with the Harrison County Schools, qualified families can come to Amy’s Attic and “shop” for needed items throughout the year.  A voucher system was created in order to easily identify and provide for clients that would not otherwise be able to afford the goods offered.  Ann has even created a process to ensure school children receive the school supplies they need through their backpack program.

Her dedication and hard work to Amy’s Attic is why Ann Kirby was selected as October’s Celebrating Volunteers winner.  Since the grand opening of the shop in 2005, Ann has been dedicated ensuring Amy’s Attic flourishes and the needs in our community are met.  She has built relationships with big box retailers, local furniture stores and area businesses to gather and display items most needed during each time of the year.  The store has assisted children, parents, domestic violence victims, new mothers and even homeless Veterans.  Every walk of life has been affected by Ann’s work and her service to the community has not gone unnoticed.

Ann Kirby is October's Celebrating Volunteers Winner

Ann considers her volunteer work with the League For Service and more specifically Amy’s Attic as a blessing.  “I volunteer because I believe that is the right thing to do.  If you have the ability to give of your time and give your heart, then you give back to help others,” stated Ann.  “One small thing can make a huge difference in someone’s life.  Making life a little easier for someone else makes it worth volunteering.”

“Amy’s Attic meets an important need to a number of families in our community.  Through Ann’s hard work, those that may go without are provided for.” Gretchen Ross of WBOY stated.  “I love that we recognize those such as Ann, who dedicate a large portion of their lives to caring for those less fortunate.  Her work not only provides a helping hand to those in need, but also builds the strength of our community.”
