Woman Left Unconscious after Striking Tree in Huntington Accident

February 16, 2011 - Huntington, W.Va. - A single-vehicle accident in Huntington sent one person to the hospital in critical condition early Tuesday morning.

WBOY and WSAZ report that the accident happened at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday on Third Avenue and 15th Street. A vehicle was travelling on the roadway when its driver evidently lost control of the vehicle and went off the road.

According to emergency dispatchers, the vehicle then struck a tree.

Kristin Nibert, 26, of Point Pleasant, was trapped inside the wreckage and unconscious immediately following the accident. After she was freed by emergency crews, Nibert was transported to St. Mary's Medical Center for medical treatment. Nibert is said to be in critical condition.

Nibert's vehicle was the only vehicle involved in the accident. No other people were in the vehicle and there were no further injuries.

What caused Nibert to lose control and crash remains to be determined. The Huntington accident is under ongoing investigation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
