Woman & Her Infant Son Killed in Jackson County Crash on I-77

October 5, 2010 - Charleston, W.Va. - Two people, a woman and her infant son, were killed Sunday in a car accident in Jackson County.

The Charleston Gazette reports that the accident happened at about 2 p.m. on Interstate 77 in Jackson County. The victim, Renea Parsons, 27, of Ravenswood, was driving northbound on the interstate at the time of the accident. She was nearing the Fairplain exit when her 1999 Volkswagen Jetta veered out of control.

Bruce Dewees, Jackson County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy, stated that Parson's vehicle travelled across the median and into the southbound lanes of traffic. The vehicle was then struck on its passenger side doors. The second vehicle, a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta, was driven by Amy Vandorp, 43, of North Carolina.

Both Parsons and her 3-month-old son died in the crash. Parsons' other son, who is 2 years old, was transported to CAMC General Hospital. According to Dewees, the 2-year-old child was in intensive care as of Monday morning.

The tragic I-77 accident remains under investigation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 380 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
