Woman Dies in Fatal Head-On Crash on Route 50 in Taylor County

January 18, 2011 - Taylor County, W. Va. - One person was killed and another was hospitalized Monday following a crash in Taylor County.

WDTV reports that the accident occurred on Route 50 in Taylor County Monday afternoon. According to Sheriff's Deputies, a vehicle was travelling eastbound on the roadway when it collided head-on with a truck travelling in the opposite direction.

The female driver of the first vehicle was thrown from her car during the crash. She died on the scene. A male passenger was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extracted by emergency crews.

The male passenger was transported to a local hospital. The extent of his injuries is unknown at this time.

According to authorities, the driver of the truck is expected to make a full recovery from accident injuries.

The cause of the fatal accident has not yet been determined. The head-on collision remains under investigation. Route 50 was closed for several hours following the accident as crews worked to clear the scene.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
