January 27, 2011 - Taylor County, W.Va. - According to witnesses, the body of a woman killed in a fatal head-on collision last week was run over by an emergency vehicle shortly after the woman was pronounced dead on the scene.
WBOY reports that Pamela Wilkins, 44, died when she was thrown from her vehicle during an accident on Route 50 that took place on Monday, January 17.
Authorities and witnesses stated that a Bridgeport fire truck accidentally hit Wilkins' body. This happened after Wilkins had been pronounced dead and a blanket had been placed over her.
Wilkins' body has been taken to the medical examiner's office to be autopsied.
Bridgeport officials have refused to make any statements regarding the incident pending the completion of an accident report by the Taylor County Sheriff's Department. The process is expected to take between 4-6 weeks.
According to officials, Wilkins' family has been notified of the incident.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
