West Virginia Man Injured in ATV Accident

Many West Virginians are enjoying the fun and excitement of all-terrain vehicle (ATV) recreation. But some people don't realize the danger of ATVs when they are not operated properly.

ATV Rider Overturns Vehicle, Requires Hospitalization

A West Virginia man learned about the dangers of ATV the hard way in July of 2010. In Jackson Township, Ohio, not far from the West Virginia border, Joshua Kirkland was driving an all-terrain vehicle on a private property. Kirkland, who is 24-years-old, reportedly lost control of his ATV and overturned it while he was trying to jump a hill.

Kirkland had to be transported by helicopter to Akron City Hospital with undetermined injuries. Police say that Kirkland lost consciousness and did not recall the ATV accident when he woke up a few minutes later.

ATV Accident Injuries, Deaths Common

Hundreds of people have died in ATV accidents in West Virginia over the last 28 years. Thousands of others have suffered various types of injuries, including: 

• Severe abrasions;
• Cuts and bruises;
• Broken and fractured bones;
• Injuries to the abdominal region;
• Injuries to the spinal cord; and
• Concussions or other brain injuries.  

A large number of these injuries happen to people who were not riding ATVs. They may be onlookers, innocent bystanders, pedestrians, or other motorists. ATV drivers who cause an accident can be sued by those who were injured just like in a regular automobile accident.
