Trucking Company Uses Advanced Safety Technology

Tractor-trailer accidents can cause immense damage and severe injuries or even death. That's why trucking companies have an obligation to maximize the safety of their vehicles. With this in mind, some freight companies are turning to advanced technology.

Con-Way Freight in Tomah, Wisconsin is one of the many trucking companies to purchase vehicles which are equipped with high-tech safety devices. These features are designed to improve trucking safety by helping the driver avoid potentially dangerous situations.

Preventing Truck Rear-End Accidents

For example, if a tractor-trailer slams into the back of a passenger vehicle in front of it, the smaller vehicle can crumple and trap, injure, or kill its occupants. But these new trucks have front bumpers which contain a collision control radar unit. This unit helps monitor the space between the truck and the vehicle ahead of it and warns the driver if they are getting too close.

Preventing Trucks from Leaving Their Lanes

Many trucking accidents occur when a truck driver leaves their lane. But Con-Way's new trucks are outfitted with a warning system that emits a "rumble-strip" noise whenever the driver starts to stray close to the lane markers or boundaries.

Preventing Trucks from Rolling Over

Rollover accidents can also cause major carnage to trucks, highways, and other vehicles. So the technologically-advanced trucks purchased by Con-Way have "roll stability control" built into their systems. This feature engages both the engine and the tractor brakes to reduce the possibility of rollovers.

Reportedly, companies who have implemented these highly-advanced systems have seen their accidents reduced by 62%. Unfortunately, not all trucking companies utilize this advanced technology.
