Truck Plunges Into Icy River After Single-Vehicle Wreck in Kanawha County

December 21, 2010 - Kanawha County, W.Va. - Two people were taken to the hospital following a single vehicle accident in Winifrede Hollow in which the couple's vehicle was sent plunging into an icy river.

WSAZ reports that the accident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. Monday on Stiles Drive in Winifrede Hollow. According to emergency officials on the scene, a white truck was traveling across a snow-covered wooden bridge when the vehicle slid off of the bridge.

The truck then overturned and landed on its roof in the creek below, entrapping the husband and wife couple within. The woman managed to extricate herself from the vehicle and get help. Her husband remained trapped in the truck with his seatbelt fastened and his head under water.

The man was freed from the vehicle when emergency crews arrived on the scene. Officials are unable to determine how long the man's head was under water.

Both husband and wife were transported to a local hospital. The medical condition of either person is unavailable at this time.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
