Toyota Prius Subject to Recall: Learn What Options Are Available to Owners

Prius has now become subject to its biggest worldwide recall, impacting about 1.9 million models (713,000 in North America). Toyota Motor Corp announced that a software glitch could cause overheating that leads to damage in the transistors. Warning lights may be triggered, putting the vehicle in failsafe mode, making it inoperable.

The fix is expected to take about 40 minutes, with dealerships updating the vehicle’s software. If that doesn’t work, it may require the entire hybrid control module to be replaced.

Owners should be notified by Toyota about the remedy. They should be able to have their vehicles fixed, free of charge, at their Toyota dealership. It’s important to bring along the recall notice. If for some reason there is a problem with the dealership complying, consumers should contact the manufacturer.

Not the First Prius Recall

Although this is the largest worldwide recall, it’s not the only major one since the third-generation Prius debuted in 2009. A recall was issued on 397,000 of these vehicles in February 2010 in order to fix another software glitch—this one affecting the anti-lock brakes. And then in June 2013, a recall was issued on 87,000 Prius vehicles because of a faulty brake pressure accumulator.

It appears that software problems is a common issue. In addition to the Prius, Toyota has a separate recall about to take place affecting approximately 260,000 vehicles. This will affect model years 2012 and 2013 Lexus RX 350 SUVs and Toyota Tacoma pickups, along with model year 2012 Toyota RAV4 SUVs. Software issues can lead to components turning off, such as traction and anti-lock braking.

Whatever the reason for a recall, if there is a defect in a vehicle and it causes an accident, injured parties may have legal recourse to recover damages they suffer. If you’re in the Clarksburg area, contact the Miley Legal Group at 304-931-4088 or contact us online to set up a consultation.
