Teen Killed in Dirt Bike Accident in Hazelton

September 8, 2010 - Hazelton, W. Va. - A teenager lost his life after crashing his dirt bike into an SUV in Hazelton, just after the SUV had exited Interstate 68.

WBOY reports that the crash occurred close to the Hazelton Exit on I-68 on Monday afternoon. David Pretzel, 19, of Bruceton Mills, was driving his dirt bike along the roadway just off of I-68 when he collided with the side of a Toyota 4Runner. The Toyota had been attempting to make a left turn at a stop sign at the time of the motorcycle accident.

Pretzel was pronounced dead on the scene. The two occupants of the Toyota were able to be treated at the scene. Both were hit by broken glass in the crash and incurred only minor injuries.

The dirt bike crash remains under investigation by the State Police accident reconstruction team. It is believed that the dirt bike's speed was a contributing factor.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 380 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
